Get on track by 2030.

Climate scientists are calling for the protection of at least 30 percent of the world’s lands, inland waters, and ocean areas by 2030 to help safeguard our air and water quality, protect our food supply and health, and prevent mass wildlife extinctions.

Ocean-based mitigation options could reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by nearly 4 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per annum in 2030 and by more than 11 billion tons per annum in 2050, relative to projected business-as-usual (BAU) emissions.

Reductions of this magnitude are larger than the emissions from all current coal fired power plants world-wide and more than China’s total emissions in 2014.
